Twitter gives CSK the reality check as Capitals thump CSK by 44 runs

By cricinsane

It is not a peculiar sight anymore to wake up to hearing so many unusual stories this Year. Hence CSK didn’t cake walk past the otherwise bunnies of the franchise from the capital remains no surprise. It was on expected lines to be honest as the Delhi Capitals really look like the team to beat this IPL but what got more eyebrows raised that it wasn’t even a run chase, it was stroll, a merciful clamping from the most successful team of the tournament. The cricketing world will look to find meaning to the most bizarre of approaches to this game only because it was CSK and because it was Dhoni leading the side. In no parallel universe otherwise, will it be justified that a successful team chasing 175 didn’t reach the tail and was drubbed by 44 runs with the best batter of the innings having a meekly SR of 125. The less said about the rusty second innings, the better.

Moving to the best from the game, Prithvi Shaw caught everyone’s eye with a stunning innings up front and Dhawan played the perfect senior pro at the other end. At 102/2 in 12 overs and Iyer and Pant at the center stage, it looked all set for a humongous finish but a brilliant Hazlewood and Curran denied them the run away winner status at the end of first innings.

With the big boundaries and dew around, CSK was still in the game but poor start from the scratchy Watson and Vijay, a lone Faf, an intentless Kedar and subdued and delayed Dhoni arrival meant the game was over much before it was. Such was the second innings, that there are absolutely no words to describe the Innings but Delhi Capitals would be a happy bunch on the prospect of how easily Amit Mishra fitted in the Ashwin’s position, with How Nortje stole the show and how Rabada played the perfect foil at the fag end of the game. CSK, have a lot of things to figure out before their next game which is a week away and they would hope to get back Rayudu and Bravo into the mix and get the talismans in their nick before it gets too late.

Here are some key takeaways from the game:

  1. CSK Combinatorics: CSK need to rope in Tahir with immediate urgency but who does he replace is a question with no answer. They need to bring in Bravo once fit but he can only replace Curran(their best bowler thus far) or Watson which daunts their batting line up. Vijay’s batting woes and an injured Ambati Rayudu means more problems for the team. CSK need to figure out their combination and get on with it.
  2. Win the toss, lose the game: Once again a confident captain defied the experts and chose the condition over the recent results and got it wrong. It is time now teams started keeping in mind the recency phenomena and adjourn their stratergy according to their strength and not the dew factor especially in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
  3. Quality Pace is difficult to play: With the way Nortje and Rabada combined this game and Cottrell and Shami combined last night, it is evident that with nip and swing, it is difficult to handle the quality fast bowling. The fast bowlers can lick their tongues before their games atleast in the first half of the IPL and get the momentum flowing.

Fans were baffled with the insane batting approaches taken by CSK and here are some of the best reactions and stats from the game.
