MatchDay 2: SRH Vs KKR Preview

By cricinsane

Two IPL Heavyweights led by two unorthodox calm captains who’ve found their mojo recently. What do they have in common? An allrounder apiece whose mystery is tough to decipher and who can play cameos that hurt the oppositions, A dynamic Oz opener different in their outlook but similar in how they strike the ball, A cream of Indian Middle order and two IPL trophies in their cabinet. Both teams have very less to be differentiated upon given how they stack up on paper. After making some shrewd purchases this time around, another successful outing awaits possibly for both the teams.

When You travel to the Eden Gardens only one team can start favourites and it’s Knight Riders every single time. A colossal army of retritional, passionate and diehard fans numbering to 70k backing their team is what the travelling teams have to fine tune themselves to first up. SRH in its early days never really had the code to win at the Edens, but they have turned the tables around last Year winning on both occasions at the venue. What would boost them up is the fact that the second match last year that they won here was a knockout game where the Superstar stalwart from Afghanistan did everything possible on the cricket field to get them over the line. For this SRH team, nothing much has changed apart from the departure of the flamboyant Gabbar and the man who lit up Eden in a world Cup final now donning the KKR outfit. Having bought Jonny Bairstow for a whooping money and with their headmaster Tom Moody claiming it to be a real strategy, it would be interesting to see how he fits in an eleven where all other foreign players clearly pick themselves. The departure of Shikhar Dhawan was aided by the arrival of David Warner and a swap deal with the Capitals that got them Vijay Shankar, Shahbaz Nadeem and Abhishek Sharma. There is hardly anything a bowling unit can do if Warner gets going at the start though. Kane Williamson, Manish Pandey, Shakib and Vijay Shankar all fit in their respective slots giving this team an oozing balance and Yusuf Pathan or Deepak Hooda can be chosen based on the match condition. And this is a team that can win on any track with any total, with the likes of Bhuvneshwar, Rashid, Kaul waiting to fire on all cylinders. But trust KKR to defy all odds even if they are stacked against them because the Bengali vibe about the City of Joy brings out the best in them really. They lead the head to head stand against the SRH and they themselves have Lynn, Narine and Russell who on any given day can take the game away from the reach of opposition single handedly. If weathering a storm situation comes up, Dinesh Karthik,Nitish Rana and Shubhman Gill wait in the wings to calm the storm and sail the boat. Having the best trio of the in fashion wrist spinners in the form of Narine, Kuldeep and Piyush Chawla, It is almost expected that the track must and should play slow(Not like the track at Chepauk did though). But if a new square is used with Eden hosting no cricket off late, trust the Eden wicket to have carry and bounce as well, much like it is known to have when hosting an International game. Despite suffering two setbacks in their pace department before the start of the season, KKR start this game as favourite and it looks highly likely for them to punch above their weight even this time around because of a settled 11 that may last the entirety of the season.

Churn them, Put them on the filters, Pass them both through a centrifuge and with utmost difficulty You may be able to pick the winner in this contest that promises everything that IPL has been all about. Fierce, Attritional, Swashbuckling action awaits at the Ground that has been nurturing cricket in India since Day 1.

What to Expect : Eden Gardens is generally a decent track with something in it for everyone and since this is a day game, dew is likely to be no factor as well. Spinners will come in handy from both sides and with the ground dimensions, Big hitters are likely to make merry.
