MatchDay 2: MI Vs DC Preview, The Battle of the Megacities

By cricinsane

Two cities, One the Capital and one the heartbeat of the Country, Fans poles apart in their demeanour and outlook, having different fates as far as the history of the IPL is concerned go head to head on a Super Sunday. The main blokes of both the teams are the local lads from the respective townships. Mumbai Indians led by Rohit Sharma who only recently through a twitter post showed the Gully like nature of a Mumbaikar assured the fans of opening throughout the the season giving them a sea breeze of content. Rishabh Pant on the other hand with his “Come Look at me” style already have big people calling his talent rare and special. This Year though, the Capitals hope for a change in their fate with a change in their owners and name. What has been an otherwise frustrating 11 Years for a Delhi supporter is quickly now another season with some hopes to salvage because Delhi Capitals have the players to make it happen this time. They always had the players, But do they have a team remains to be seen. The Earlier franchises have tried roping in Sir Vivian Richards, Ricky Ponting, Gautam Gambhir to no avail and now have their hopes pinned to Dada who ignites a spark of hope. What sets Delhi Capitals apart from others is the cream in their batting order and the penetrating bowling options that they have. Giving confidence to them is a set of foreign internationals who have a proven mettle in the T20 domain. Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw are the defined fraternised version of Youth and Experience and possess the prowess to explode and play according to the needs of the situation as and when it demands. A middle order comprising Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Collin Ingram give them stability and if Rishabh Pant is anywhere near to the form he carried last Year, this team is likely to go the distance with the bowling options they possess. Trent Boult, Kagiso Rabada, Sandeep Lamichhane are match winners and possibly best three in their respective roles. Most of the talks around balance will be decided by how Indian allrounders of Axar Patel, Rahul Tewatia and Harshal Patel throw themselves up in mix of things. Ishant Sharma with his experience can come in handy at times when needed.

Mumbai Indians are the slow starters who in the first half of the season almost play cluelessly only to bounce back in the second half of the season. Ever since Rohit has taken over the captaincy, Mumbai’s fortunes have turned dramatically and they have followed an alternating digital sequence of IPL victories ever since. All those blue army expecting this season to be theirs can hardly be blamed, neither by seeing the trend or by logic. It is logical more so because of the balance that Mumbai Indians are overflowing with. They can even have a balanced 11 from their bench strength much to credit their owners for having an amazing auction. For Mumbai to do well, Pandya brothers hold the aces. If that is not enough, Ben Cutting and Kieron Pollard can turn any match in their favour single handedly. The availability of Lasith Malinga might not haunt them as much as the absence of an Indian fast bowling because as and when Workload Management strikes, this Bumrah-less lineup might lose its spine. Mitchell Mcclenaghan, Mayank Markande provide the team with able and proven abilities at their respective fronts. However all eyes will be on the champion that is Yuvraj Singh. Prior to the practise session the previous night, Ganguly was heard saying to Yuvi “Play like Yuvraj Singh” and if that happens, be sure of entertainment. There is alot to look forward to in this Battle Megacities none of which wants to give it up against the other.

Since the game is to be played at Wankhede, the toss will play a crucial role in deciding this fixture. Delhi Capitals start as overwhelming favourites to take this tie but MI might want to get their fortress back which has been breached far too often recently but they have to do exceedingly well to get past the finish line.

What to expect : A hot Mumbai atmosphere and a flat Wankhede track with decent carry makes You sure of a high scoring encounter.
